Join the Minority Innovation Weekend 2020 Planning Committee 

Minority Innovation Weekend (MIW) is a weekend summit dedicated to aiding minority innovators launch and sustain tech-focused startups and showcasing tech startups that have a minority founder or co-founder. MIW is planned with a group of dedicated volunteers working to aid minority innovators in launching tech-focused startups.

Planning Committee Position Descriptions 

  • Conference Chairperson – Organizes committee activities and works to ensure that tasks assigned to committee members are accomplished.
  • Vice Chairperson – In conjunction with Conference Chairperson, organizes committee activities and works to ensure that tasks assigned to committee members are accomplished.
  • Grant & Sponsorship Coordinator – Researches, identifies, and applies for sponsorship and grant opportunities for the Minority Innovation Entrepreneurship Program (MIEP) and Minority Innovation Weekend (MIW).
  • University Coordinator – Engages local college and university science, engineering, technology, mathematics, business, and entrepreneurship departments and professors to promote and garner support for MIW on local college and university campuses.
  • Marketing & Media Coordinator – Develops and manages promotion of MIW. Engages local media to promote MIW.
  • Cybersecurity Track Coordinator – Plans, coordinates, and executes Cybersecurity track for MIW.
  • Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence Track Coordinator – Plans, coordinates, and executes the Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence track.
  • Startup Fundamentals Track Coordinator – Plans, coordinates, and executes Startup Fundamentals track for MIW.
  • Health Innovation Track Coordinator – Plans, coordinates, and executes Health Innovation track for MIW.
  • Alternate Track Coordinator – Propose a new MIW Conference track to MIW committee! The Alternate Track Coordinator will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing the approved track for MIW 2020. Don’t worry, the name of the track will not be “Alternate Track.”
  • MIW Innovation Marketplace & Pitch Competition Coordinator – Plans, coordinates, and executes Innovation Marketplace & Pitch Competition for MIW.
  • MIW STEM Professionals Career Fair Coordinator – Plans, coordinates, and executes STEM Professionals Career Fair for MIW.

MIW provides minorities launching new businesses an opportunity to connect with each other and gain exposure to investors.

“The early stages of entrepreneurship can be a particularly isolating time due the do-it-all nature and time constraints of starting a business,” said Sir Walter Richardson, the MIW 2019 coordinator. “Even when given the chance to engage the broader technical or entrepreneurial world, the demographics are such that minorities can still feel isolated.”

OVERVIEW

The Minority Innovation Entrepreneurship Program (MIEP) / Minority Innovation Weekend (MIW) Innovation Marketplace and Pitch Competition (IM&PC) will showcase tech-focused startups that have been launched by a minority founder or by founding teams that include a minority co-founder. Teams participating in the IM&PC portion of MIW will have the opportunity to pitch to investors.

REQUIREMENTS

Each participating team should be an idea or early stage tech-focused company that have a minority co-founder or founder. A tech-focused startup is a company whose purpose is to bring technology products or services to market. These companies deliver new technology products or services or deliver existing technology products or services in new ways.

INNOVATION MARKETPLACE

Each participating team will be provided a table in the MIW Innovation Marketplace. The marketplace will allow MIW attendees and judges to meet each participating team and to learn more about each startup company’s innovation. Each participating team will be provided a table with two chairs that they can use to highlight their startup.

PITCH COMPETITION

Pitch Competition Format

Each team in the Innovation Marketplace will have 3 minutes to pitch judges and potential investors. After each pitch, judges will be given 7 minutes to ask questions.

Pitch Competition Grand Prize

The MIW 2019 Pitch Competition winner will win a 6 month membership to ETC’s Incubate Baltimore (https://etcbaltimore.com/incubator/). Incubate Baltimore provides member companies with the resources they need — access to seed capital, mentors, potential partners, a collaborative community, etcetera — to transform their big idea into a big deal, as quickly as possible. Incubate Baltimore has a team of C-Level Advisors that provides customized expert advice, guidance, and assistance in everything from management and marketing to legal and financial issues, and more. Incubate Baltimore also offers networking opportunities and connections to provide access to the widest community of entrepreneurs, investors and potential customers as possible.
